Want Extra Credit?

I've put 6 extra credit assignments online. Turn in any you want graded by the end of the day on Friday, Sept. 25.

The link is:

I will also link in the upper right corner of this blog.

Extra credit assignments count for Content Knowledge points to improve your Mural project grade.

**** Deadline Change! ***

Okay, guys and gals. Hurricane Ike means we get out of school a little early Friday (Sept. 12). I'm pushing back the deadline on the project. You will have time on Monday / Tuesday to work on the project -- come prepared to work. But your presentations are later -- you do NOT have to dress up for class on Monday / Tuesday.

Here are the new deadlines:

Periods 1, 3, and 4 (A day geometry students): Friday, Sept. 19.
Periods 6 and 7 (B day geometry students): Monday, Sept. 22.

What's due, you ask? Your design, your budget, and a PowerPoint presentation:

1. Your final mural design. That's a geogebra file. You'll need to include all required geometric transformations, and your 2-D perspective object.
2. Your budget. That can be in Word, Excel, Notepad, or e-mail. You'll need to write down how much paint (in square feet) you'll need in each color, and specify which shapes are what areas. Example: "We'll need 388 sq. feet of green, because we have three hexagons that are each 116 sq. feet, and one triangle that's 40 sq. feet." You'll also need to say how many accent stones to use -- that's the perimeter of your 2-D perspective object, in cm. Remember that 1 foot = 12 inches, and 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
3. Your presentation. This will be 5-7 minutes long, so it should be about 5 slides in PowerPoint. It should include a picture of your design, and you should talk about how you included transformations, what some of the areas of shapes are and how you got them, etc. Also be prepared to answer questions.

The rubrics are available online -- click the "Math Mural Project Files" link at the top right corner of this blog.

Sept 9/10, 2008

You all worked hard on your initial mural designs, and I appreciate that. Now it's time to start finalizing your design and your paint and accent stone budget.

* To get the paint budget, you'll need to compute area for all your shapes. Feel free to revise your design at this stage, to be sure you're using simple shapes.

* To get the accent stone budget, you'll need to get the perimeter of your 2-D perspective object.

Today:
1. Do the warm-up.
2. I'll hand back your initial design. If you need to turn in additional files, you have until midnight tonight, for a maximum possible score of 90% in all categories.
3. We'll talk about what you need to turn in next.
4. We'll learn how to compute areas.
5. You'll work in your groups to finalize your design and make your budget calculations.
6. Do the Exit ticket.

What'll be due next, & what you'll be graded on:
* Design Plan -- Like your initial design, but finalized, cleaned up, and in color.
* Budget -- You'll need to know how much of each color of paint is needed, and how many accent stones.
* Presentation -- 7 minute Powerpoint, presented as a group.
* Collaboration
* Professionalism

Day two of mural design.

You'll be working in your groups all period today, on your mural design.

DON'T FORGET: By the end of the period today, you should have a design saved in geogebra, and a written description emailed to me.

The grading rubric can be viewed here: http://drop.io/mathmural. It's the file called "prelimdesign."

I've made a list of the things you need to include in your design here: http://akinnthsgeometry.backpackit.com/pub/1575142.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO TURN IN TODAY!

Design:
1. If you gave me a file last time, let me know and I will give it to you. I have it on my USB drive.
2. If you don't already have a "geogebra" icon on your desktop, go to www.geogebra.org. Click "start geogebra," then "geogebra webstart." Then click "OK" or "yes" or "run" to anything it pops up, until you have a geogebra window open.
3. Work on your design. If you need help with geogebra, ask me.
4. By the end of the period, save your work to a filename that includes your period and group number. Copy it to my directory. Open "my computer," then the "S:" drive, then "NTHS," then "Shared," then "Students." Drag your file onto the "Holland Drop Box" folder. Check with me to see if it copied successfully.

Description:
1. You'll need to, AS A GROUP, write at least 1-2 paragraphs fully describing your design and how it uses the geometric transformations and other required elements.
2. By the end of the period, email your description TO ME at christina.holland@akinsnths.austinisd.org. Include your period and group number in the subject line of the email.

Welcome, Akins NTHS Geometry Students!

General Info: Since PeBL is still having some problems, I've started this blog to help us keep track of all the important files, assignments and dates for your Math Mural project. There's a link over there on the right to the files -- there you'll find the entry document, the follow-up email that describes the design elements you need to include, a calendar that tells you when everything is due, grading rubrics, and more. Check this block and that file drop site often for updates.

To Do Today (Sept. 3 /4):

(1) Go to the file drop site and download the file called "transformations.doc." In your group, follow the instructions in the document, filling in all the yellow highlighted blanks (including the period and group number!). Save it to your local desktop with a new filename: transformations_per[]gr[].doc, filling in the current period and your group number. For example, in period 2, group 3 would save to "transformations_per2gr3.doc." Raise your hand when this is done, and I will come save it to my USB drive. Once I have it, clear it off the desktop.

(2) As a class, we will go over the calendar for the rest of the project and the grading rubric for the preliminary design plan.

(3) Work in your groups to complete your preliminary design plan. Your design plan should have two parts: a written description and a graphic file, BOTH DUE AT THE END OF CLASS TODAY.

The graphic file should be created using a program called geogebra. Go to www.geogebra.org. Click on "Start Geogebra" and then on "GeoGebra WebStart," and follow the directions (say "yes" or "ok" to all questions) until geogebra opens up. Lay out your design in this program. Note that you can set the limits of the x and y axis (and your mural is 40 wide by 25 high.) Save your file to your desktop as: design_per[]gr[]. Raise your hand when this is done and I will come save it to my USB drive. Once I have it, clear it off the desktop.

Email the written description to me at christina.holland@akinsnths.austinisd.org. Include the period and your group number in the subject line.

(4) Log off!

Thank you!
